Backstreet Jazz & Blues Club
Biography & Highlights
You pull up off West Port Plaza Drive and hear the bass leaking through the brick before you even pay for parking. It is a tight room where everyone’s knee-to-knee by the second set, and the soundboard sits right there in the corner next to the coat hooks. You won’t find any fancy craft cocktail lists here, just pitchers of cheap draft and regulars who have owned the same barstools since nineteen-ninety-something.
The stage sits low enough that the upright bass player practically kicks your drink if you grab a table up front. It’s dark, sticky, and you’re going to smell like bourbon and cigarettes by midnight. The door guy takes cash only if the card reader acts up, which it usually does when the humidity climbs. You don't come here for quiet listening rooms; you come because the sax player doesn't care about your early morning shift.
Sets stretch past midnight without anyone checking watches. The bartenders keep pouring heavy doubles in plastic cups while the crowd yells out requests across the room. By the time you stumble back out to the parking lot, your ears are ringing and your jacket reeks of stale smoke.
